CJ grasped the collar of Raine’s giant coat with one hand. He’d thrown it around her shoulders as they’d left the club. She was swimming in the thing and had to cinch it hard around her waist to keep from dragging along the wet pavement. It might have been easier to just make a tent out of it and wait out the storm inside.

The deluge didn’t seem to bother Raine. He strode toward the corner of 11th and Mission like a god who couldn’t be bothered with the fickle nature of the elements. His shirt and jeans were soaked through, and they clung to every line and bulge on his well-defined body. He might be a pompous devil, but he sure was a fine one.

And a big one too. Did she really know what she was getting herself into? A fantasy was one thing, but if this guy got any strange ideas in his head, she wouldn’t be able to stop him.

As if he could read her thoughts, he stopped just short of the corner and turned toward her. “Second thoughts?”

The challenge in his voice spurred her to pick up her pace. To hell with the consequences, she’d be damned if she was going to lose this battle of wills with him.

“You’re not getting off that easy,” she said.

He raised a brow. It was the first show of humor that she’d seen from him. “You have no idea,” he answered.

CJ didn’t slow as she turned the corner. He could keep up with her for a change. The victory was short lived. He made up the distance between them in two steps.

“Mercy Club is just ahead,” he said. “In the Arsenal.”

CJ could see the top of the old brick building peeking above the skyline. It looked every bit as formidable as it’s name. It was rumored to have a real dungeon in the basement. It was where the army used to toss the worst of the worst back when this city really was the Wild West. Now it was used for…something else.

Her steps slowed. Her nerves started up. Her self-assurance started to fade.

Raine put his broad hand on the small of her back. She wasn’t sure if he meant it as a reassuring gesture or a prod to keep her going. Either way, she didn’t need it.

She stepped to the side so suddenly that she slipped on the wet pavement. Raine caught her just as she started to fall. CJ wrenched her arm away as soon as she was upright.

“That’s the second time I’ve had to save you from your own petulance.” He let the rest go unsaid. Next time maybe he wouldn’t.

“I didn’t ask for your help,” she reminded him.

She half expected him to tell her to go to hell and leave her there on the street. God knew he could have any woman in the damn city. There had to be easier, sweeter pickings than her. Apparently there were throngs of women who were willing to curl up at his feet and play willing slave to his master.
